PHOTO GALLERY OF THE RESTORATION OF THE HISTORIC CCC LODGE

December 2007

Piece by piece, each board in the concession stand area is tagged, mapped, and removed.

A back view of the concession bar with the mop closet and the sound room closet removed.

Looking from the back door to the grand entrance.

Looking at where the old refrigerators and freezer used to be stored.

Removal of the T&G flooring reveals a circa 1970 repair and circa 1937 original, all of it rotten.

The rotten floor is demolished without mapping or tagging.

Repair work completed earlier this summer is revealed in the crawl space opening on the right.

Old freezer room area, note moldy gray soil mixed in with healthy dark soil.

This grand old beam is so rotten that the conduit attached to it simply fell off with the touch of a hand.

Large chunks of 1X8 flooring and 2X10 joists disintegrate, note moldy white joist on the right.

Circa 1960 plywood and 2X10 joist rotten enough to be broken by hand and ready for the dumpster.

November 2007

Cellar entrance (circa 1965) removed Note pink-colored logs.

Looking down old staircase to cellar. It acted as a funnel, flowing water into the basement.

Removing the old concrete stairs and digging the hole for a new entrance.

Digging the sump pit for the new cellar entrance 55 gallon drum.

Grading the drain tile and setting it in place for the new cellar entrance.

Filling the new cellar entrance with 6 inches of crushed rock.

New cellar entrance under construction.

New cellar door installed, the area will be backfilled up to the grade in spring.

Cellar doors in operation weathertight, solid, and no more leaks.

New 240 volt heater installed in the cellar to prevent repeat trouble; Note 5000 CFM dehumidifier on the right.

New “ice free” sump pump outlets installed no more water in the basement.

Preparing to work inside in the winter plastic heat barrier installed.

Concession stand area sitting on a rotten floor and sinking into the basement.

Concession stand floor and walls dropped 3 inches. The ceiling stayed in place. Note gap at arrows.

Note walls sinking into the cellar. Arrows show the gap between ceiling and top of wall is 3 inches and growing.

August 2007

Digging sump pump pit under the hallway.

Notice the high water line that includes 12 inches of recently added crushed rock.

Drain tiles under the west hall connected and already functioning.

Digging the sump pit under the concession stand.

Notice the old concrete blocks and rebar that had to be removed to get the pit in place. Lots of sewage “run off” at this location.

Hallway pump installed and ready for work.

Concession stand pump installed. Note the pipe extending under the east hall to a third pump.

All three pumps exit underneath the kitchen.

Water that used to be inside now being pumped outdoors.

West hall fireplace now re-enforced with tapcons, green treated lumber and joist hangers.

Rotten and moldy crawl space windows.

New crawl space windows being constructed and installed.

Hot, steamy dishwasher water, chunks of food, and other miscellaneousness has spewed straight out of the kitchen onto the crawl space floor for at least the past ten years.

Plumbing trouble corrected, sending waste water into the sewer drain instead of onto the floor. Note totally rotten timbers and decking.

Beginning the final phase of crawl space construction by installing a vapor barrier. This shot was taken under the west hall.

New plumbing installed and exiting through new windows.

Insulating all the old copper plumbing to prevent sweating and condensation leaks on the floor.

Beneath the hallway connecting the kitchen and grand entrance. Note new sump pump, walls and floor wrapped in 20 mil vapor barrier.

Beneath the hallway, looking west toward the kitchen. Note the slope of the floor graded toward the sump pump.

Beneath the west hall. This space was originally a narrow, moldy “V-shaped” trench, but now is a dry and usable work space. Note the circulation fan.

Beneath the west hall, the space is completely sealed from mold, radon, and water.

Beneath the west hall fireplace. Previously, it was a rotten, leaky mess of mud and mold, but now has green treated timbers and a vapor barrier.

Temporary repair to external crawl space entrance. Staircase looking top down.

Basement crawl space entrance, two feet of mud excavated, old wooden stair case landing removed, old concrete landing removed, walls shored up and braced with 3/4” plywood, 1 foot of fresh crushed rock added to landing. Note waterproof light switch on the wall.

Beneath the public restrooms looking toward the east hall entrance.

Second sump pump featuring a high water alarm and a 5000 CFM sani-dry dehumidifier.

Third sump pump installed under the east hall. Walls remain to be wrapped with vapor barrier and some drain tile work remains to be completed.

July 2007

40 yards of moldy soil out and 60 yards of crushed stone in.

West hall excavated and graded for drainage.

One of hundreds of loads of crushed stone being added to crawl space.

West hall with crushed stone in place, ready for drain tile installation.

Foundation under hallway is a rotten and sinking mess. Note disused staircase coming down from kitchen--"boarded over" sometime circa 1960.

Kitchen / hallway fireplace leakage following a rain shower.

Removing the dirt access ramp by hand in the west hall.

Using green treated material around west hall fireplace to prevent future decay.

Installing new decking in the west hall.

New decking in place west hall.

New decking installed and ready to go - West hall.

Excavating east hall, note the use of plywood sheets to drive and stand on. Soil has consistency of mashed potatoes.

Removing rotten floor structure in east hall with a chain and a tractor.

Hauling in fresh crushed stone to replace the moldy muck removed earlier.

Installing drain tile under the stage in the east hall.

East hall decking installed.

Looking toward the stage with new decking in place.

Constructing the new floor in the east hall.

Using a jackhammer to break up the old floor beneath the kitchen. Note pump in lower-right corner used to keep water at bay while working.

Defective drain system dumps kitchen waste directly onto the floor instead of into the sewer / septic system.

Flash flooding ruins much of the Peace Garden in late June, but also serves to prove our newly-installed drain tiles function perfectly. Note water cascade by arrow.

Brand new 5000 CFM industrial de-humidifier begins to "fight back" against the mold and damp.

15 yards of crushed stone piled under the newly constructed hallway will be disbursed and graded by hand in the crawl space.

June 2007

Crawl space under the east hall, 2 x 10 floor joists have rotten in half and collapsed.

Cutting open the tongue and groove flooring to begin removal.

Interior view of east hall fireplace following a rain shower, the light colored patches are dry, the rest is wet from seepage.

East hall tongue and groove flooring damaged during removal, this flooring was removed once before in 1956 to facilitate repair of the original CCC decking.

West hall crawl space, note water flow in the valley down the center and mold growth on beams and soil.

Failed concrete footing under the kitchen, note mold on beams and walls.

West hall tongue and groove flooring banded up and ready for storage.

Tar paper installed between the plywood decking and tongue and groove flooring trapped moisture in the crawl space, causing the floor to rot from the bottom up, note still damp water stains on the plywood in a dusty dry room.

Crawl space under the kitchen, old CCC wood fired cook stove is a pile of rust.

Annual crawl space flooding, note high water mark on the wall and moisture dripping from pipes and joists.

Beneath the hallway connecting the kitchen and grand entrance, some joists crumble with bare hands.

Crawl space entrance and staircase, this is an "add-on" from some unknow date. original crawl space access gained through trap door in kitchen (now boarded over) note soil erosion and foundation breaks.

Bottom of crawl space staircase looking out and up. Note high water mark on door.

Removing nails from the tongue and groove flooring.

Beginning to excavate soil from the West Hall crawl space.

East Hall floor removed, note soil erosion in center of floor and white mold on surface.

East Hall entrance door, note rotted sill plate and mold damage.

East Hall entrance door #2, water-induced damage.

West Hall wall crack runs through the footing.

West Hall floor removed, note water leakage on fireplace front following rain storm.

Hallway connecting kitchen and Grand Entrance, note mold growing on joists.

Floor joists exposed in East Hall.

Floor joists in West Hall exposed.

1937 CCC Log Lodge

Rear view of lodge with crawlspace entrance.

South-facing view.

North view, many damaged rafters.

East view with handcarved granite fireplace needs tuckpointing.

East hall, all windows need restoration.

Kitchen area, source of crawlspace water, bad drainage.

Another view of kitchen area.

Stone wall foundation damage, note cracks.

This is part of the failed concrete footing holding up the kitchen. This crack appeared for the first time in the spring of 2007.

The concrete footing underneath this wall has failed, allowing the log wall to drop.

Removing the original tongue and groove flooring, mostly maple and oak.

Unrestored view of the east hall.

Another unrestored view of the east hall.

Unrestored view of the west hall.

Another unrestored view of the west hall, note the failed foundation in the far corner where all walls are angling down.

Unrestored view of the west hall.

Looking from the west hall to the east hall through the grand entrance.

West hall fireplace in need of tuckpointing.

Each tongue and groove board has been numbered and mapped to ensure it goes back into its original position once restoration is complete.

Stage in the east hall; Each tongue and groove board has been numbered and mapped.

Tongue and groove flooring removed from the west hall, awaiting banding and storage until re-installation in Fall of 2007.

Original 1937 floor decking, note the orange cones that designate where there are holes in the flooring.

West hall tongue and groove flooring stacked in the east hall awaiting banding and storage.

In the days before concrete anchors, the CCC workers attached wooden trim to the rock walls by embedding 2x4 nailers in the concrete.

A Painstaking Process!

Conference room doors added to the east hall, circa 1950?
